Effectiveness of Bear Spray
Bear spray may sound like a joke product created by late night television host Stephen Colbert, but in fact, bear spray is very real and highly effective. In a survey of Alaskan bear attacks, when repellent bear spray was used it was nearly 100 percent effective. By contrast, using a gun to stop an attack is effective only 50 percent of the time, and that’s when multiple shots are fired to bring the bear down.
Bear spray is a form of pepper spray, but it is far more potent than what you would use on a human attacker. Bear spray is also deployed differently. It should be sprayed in a horizontal sweeping motion to form a cloud barrier. The spray produces an orange cloud, in addition to the pepper, which is a deterrent even to a charging bear.
Mace Pepper Spray
If you’re using public transportation going to and from work, it is very advisable to arm yourself with an easy to use non-lethal weapon that may subdue any potential assailant long enough for you to run for help and safety. Mace pepper spray has 10% pepper strength. This intensity is the same as what the police use when dispersing crowds.
The spray is best recommended for women and teenage students who are usually exposed to dangerous elements. This handy weapon has a compact design and is housed in a cozy leather case. Each canister contains five one second burst actions. A 15-gram unit container can spray up to 6-12 feet away. It is very effective to deter an assailant from coming closer. Mace pepper spray is a ideal non-lethal weapon against urban violence.
Laws And Pepper Spray
Pepper spray is one of the most inexpensive and readily available home security systems on the market. Since one of the recent blogs brings up the legality of pepper spray in the United States, I thought I would expand on the current known restrictions. Pepper spray is legal in all fifty states. However, you cannot carry pepper spray on an airplane, in carry-on baggage, or in any passenger area. The FAA will allow one container (no larger than four ounces) of pepper spray per traveler in checked luggage.
Certain United States cities and states do have restrictions regarding the purchase, ownership and use of pepper spray guns. In New York, the pepper spray gun sellers must be a local pharmacy or licensed firearm dealer. Massachusetts law resembles that of New York, with an additional requirement that the buyer must obtain a Firearms Identification Card. Wisconsin allows straight pepper spray no stronger than a 10% concentrate, but no tear gas, UV dye or combination sprays are allowed; the spray canister must be between 15 and 60 grams in weight and must be equipped with a safety feature. In Michigan, combination sprays are not allowed, CS is the only component of tear gas allowed, pepper spray can be no stronger than a 2% concentrate, and cans cannot contain more than 35 grams. In California, pepper spray canisters cannot be more than 2.5 ounces. Please check with local law enforcement agency to ensure you are aware of the most current pepper spray regulations in your area.
Woman Sprays Teen’s Attacker
There is a court case being tried in Canada right now that caught my attention. A woman is accused of two counts of assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose after she blasted a teenager with bear mace. The teen was beating up the son of the defendant’s friend.
The son had called to be picked up from a party, but his parents had been drinking, so the defendant offered to drive. When she arrived on the scene she saw the attacker on top of her friend’s son dove into the melee to rescue him. She got punched in the face and unleashed the bear mace, fearing for her life. I do not understand why she is being prosecuted at all. If someone had threatened me or a loved one, then I would also unleash mace spray or whatever self-defense weapon I had in my arsenal. In my mind, the fault lies with the teenager who clearly attacked the other boy.
Keep Violent Dogs at Bay
It’s unfortunate that there aren’t more stringent procedures for animal adoption. I have encountered many incidents where owners neglect their dogs or fail to train them properly. In my neighborhood there is a home where there are two large aggressive pit bulls that are rarely leashed and often escape from their yard. This has become an issue for many other dog owners in the neighborhood, myself included, who have smaller dogs that could easily be mauled by these two untrained dogs.
To protect myself and my dog, I have begun carrying dog repellent whenever we go out on walks. In the event that one of the pit bulls tries to attack me or my pet, I spray the repellent in their face. The repellent has capsaicin which is what is found in pepper spray. It doesn’t cause the dog any permanent harm, but it will halt them in their tracks and cause their eyes to water up. So far I’ve only had to use the repellent once and I think it taught the unruly dogs a lesson, though I continue to carry a can, just in case.
Pepper spray ring, girls’ new best friend
Walking alone to your car late at night is a heart pounding experience. You’ve got your keys in hand so you don’t have to fumble through your purse and you try to stay in well lit areas. Even with those safety precautions, you probably don’t feel safe. A product that will ease your mind is a pepper spray ring.
A pepper spray ring is a small, stylish ring to be worn on your pointer finger. In case of attack, all you have to do is flick the safety switch with your thumb and point the ring toward your attacker. A stream of concentrated pepper spray will be unleashed, causing your attacker to be temporarily incapacitated. The pepper spray ring is the perfect gift for a daughter, girlfriend, or female co-worker. Having this small but powerful self-defense gadget will put you and her more at ease.
Bears Everywhere
With the number of bears on the rise, and their habitats on the decrease, it’s become increasingly likely for human beings to encounter a bear at some point in their lives. As we continue to encroach on their natural habitats we’re literally forcing them out, and not all of them are all that willing to go quietly. Bear sighting and attacks across the country are evidence of this. It’s even true when we’re not hurting their habitat but just trying to take it in and enjoy it. This leaves campers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts particularly susceptible to a bear encounter.
People have long thought the only to get rid of a bear is to shoot it. The problem is people just don’t carry guns with them everywhere. This is especially with most hikers and campers. A gun can be unsafe, unwieldy and very expensive. That’s why bear spray makes an excellent alternative to guns when you’re heading outdoors. Affordable, effective and easy to carry pepper spray could easily mean the difference between life and death in a bear encounter.
